An interesting and thought provoking piece. I had always instinctively known that lamps make a space feel cosier and more welcoming, but I had never stopped to consider why. I find the idea of a lamp in the bathroom to be particularly intriguing! On the topic of light, I also think that a home without an abundance of natural light, for example due to small or poorly positioned windows, lacks beauty and soul.
Thanks so much Steph! I think there are many things we know are more wholesome or appealing instinctively but don't exactly know how to articulate why. That's what I think makes other people's writing resonate with us (or not)- when we know what they're saying is true to our experience, and they've given words to it for us in a way we hadn't yet for ourselves. This is the case with all my favourite writers- I fill their books with underlines & asterisks because they've given explicit shape to my intuitions!
Re. natural light, I couldn't agree more. Another element I plan to write on is how we can comfortably incorporate parts of the outside world (natural, cultural) into our homes, and how important that is. Natural light of course is a massive factor!
I love the aesthetics of your work here! It’s so right up my alley. Did you know the angle of the light coming into our eyes actually helps our body know what time of day it is? The low lighting is really important for allowing relaxation and the correct hormones in evening and early morning.
Thank you so much Nikko. It's really so, so nice to find people who appreciate these things and think they matter. I'm looking forward to reading your work also.
Lovely piece! Warm and interesting lighting at all levels, especially eye level and lower, brings so much humanity to a space.
Thanks so much Julie. Humanity is the right word. It's so grounding to connect with people who appreciate the importance of these things.

And no I didn't know that about the angle of the light but I am not at all surprised!
